Martlets may be over, but the show goes on ... Those of you who attended the Jamboree and ordered a copy of the bound edition of the Daily Martlet may have been wondering what happened to it. Well, although it has taken some time to get it ready, we think you'll be rather pleased with the result. Thanks to the fact that Martlets eventually had a bit of money left over, we have been able to afford the production of a more comprehensive, 52-page souvenir book: "Martlets Jamboree 2007: I Was There!"
The professionally printed book includes full colour reproductions of all the Daily Martlet issues but also many additional pages of brilliant colour photographs which tell the story of this amazing event from beginning to end. More than 3,500 photographs were submitted, including many taken by Scouts, Cubs and Explorers in the Discovery Zone's digital photography section. Selecting the best of these for inclusion in the book has been a major task but the end result is a fantastic and unique record of this once-in-a-lifetime event.
All those who ordered copies of the 'bound edition' for £2 during the jamboree (or for £3 afterwards) should receive their copies of "I Was There" during November. In addition, complimentary copies will be issued to the leader of every Scout Troop, Cub Pack, Explorer Unit and Beaver Colony who attended, to each of the VIPs who attended and to a number of other supporters of the event. Copies are even going to be filed in the East Sussex County Council Archive.
It is likely that some additional copies from the print run will remain and these will be available for purchase, on a first come first served basis, by anyone else who was at the Jamboree, at the price of£10 per copy (which reflects the actual cost of printing and distribution). To order one or more of these additional copies, simply write to Marie Carr at the County Office at Broadstone Warren, quoting the name of your Group or Unit and enclosing a cheque payable to East Sussex County Scout Council.
Stocks are limited and there will not be a second print run, so it may be advisable to 'phone Marie before sending in your order, to make sure that stocks are still available.
For anyone out there who went to Martlets and is interested in stamp collecting, there are two more Martlets souvenirs available. These are official Royal Mail First Day Covers of the full set of Centenary of Scouting Stamps, which were posted to the Martlets Jamboree with special Brownsea Island postmarks on the first day of issue. We had intended to run a competition to win these during the Jamboree itself but, because of the postal strike at that time, the covers did not arrive until the last day, when everyone was leaving.
So, if you know someone who attended Martlets and would like to win one of these very special souvenirs, all they have to do is send a plain postcard, to the address shown below, giving their name, the name of their Scout Troop / Cub Pack etc and their address, together with their answers to the following questions.
The closing date for entries will be Monday 31st December 2007, and the prizes will go to the first two correct entries drawn from those received by that date. Send your entries to: Alan Thompson, 25 Wilson Grove, Uckfield, East Sussex, TN22 2BU. (please do NOT send orders for copies of the book to this address!)
